Cénac-et-Saint Julien. Grotte XIV.

fig. 8 et 9The cave XIV contains rich palaeontological layers often plundered by the collectors of Bear remains. The rescue excavations which are led there since 1982 interest the central part of the cavity (locus 1) and, since 1987, the northern gallery of the cave (locus 2). 18 fossiliferous layers until now recognized (the base of the deposit is not reached) delivered remains attributable to Middle Pleistocene taxa. The temporary list of the identified genera and species is the following one: Lynx; Dinobastis or Homotherium; Panthera gombaszoegensis; Panthera (leo) spelaea; Vulpes praeglacialis; Ursus deningeri (very archaic); Rangifer tarandus? ; Hemitragus bonali; Dicerorhinus; Bats. For the moment we shall only notice that some Ursus deningeri teeth and bones of very small size which remind the Bear remains of small size previously founded in the Cave XIV and by F. Prat in the Cave XIII. Finally in both choppers are added two chips of fair flint.La grotte XIV renferme de riches niveaux ossifères souvent saccagés par les collectionneurs de dents d'Ours. Les fouilles de sauvetage qui y sont menées depuis 1982 intéressent la zone centrale de la cavité et, depuis 1987, le locus 2. Les 18 couches fossilifères jusqu'à présent reconnues (la base du remplissage n'a pas été atteinte) ont livré des restes attribuables à des formes du Pléistocène moyen. La liste provisoire des genres et espèces identifiés est la suivante : Lynx ; Dinobastis ou Homotherium ; Panthera gombaszoegensis ; Panthera (leo) spelaea ; Vulpes praeglacialis ; Ursus deningeri (très archaïque) ; Rangifer tarandus ? ; Hemitragus bonali ; Dicerorhinus ; Chauve-souris. Pour le moment on remarquera simplement les quelques dents et os d'Ours de très faibles dimensions qui rappellent les pièces de petite taille récoltées les années précédentes dans la Grotte XIV et par F. Prat dans la Grotte XIII. Enfin aux deux choppers déjà exhumés s'ajoutent deux éclats de silex blond
