This thesis contributes to the understanding of the rural financial market in developing countries with a specific accent on the role of groups. Microfinance successes in providing sustainable financial services to the poor have indeed been largely attributed to the use of credit groups. Beyond the participation in microcredit groups, participation in structured groups of all sorts is attracting development practitioners' attention as a privileged means for the poors to accumulate a specific form of capital, namely social capital.My analysis are based on two countries that differ greatly in their rural credit market: Bangladesh and the Philippines.
