High-energy mechanical mixing of metallic powders can be used to bring about different degrees of elemental layer refinement, tending eventually to atomic-level mixing and complete alloying. The decreasing diffusional distance required to obtain a homogeneous phase allows easier alloying at lower temperatures and for shorter periods of time, and it becomes possible to create and maintain highly refined and metastable structures.
