Ten years ago a psychologist, Craik, put forward the suggestion that the behaviour of a human operator in a control system is in some ways analogous to the behaviour of a sampled-data servo—mechanism. Although Craik's work is comparatively well known, little has been done to test the validity of his hypothesis, presumably because of the difficulties associated with the mathematical treatment of an intermittently operating system
