Man has fought with insect and related pests for thousands of years. They have ruined crops and herds and caused immense suffering. With the increasing population of the world, food production has become of critical importance. The introduction, after 1939, of DDT as an insecticide was the first offensive in man's war against pests using potent chemical compounds. However, the pests have fought back and early successes have been offset by the development of resistance to the pesticides (O'Brien, 1967)
