This thesis is an attempt to throw light on the character and outlook of William Grant Broughton, the first and only Bishop of Australia, by an examination of his English background and early work. The influences to which he was exposed during the first forty years of his life, before he set foot in Australia, largely determined his reaction to the colonial situation. The greater part of the thesis is taken up with a delineation of these influences and then follows a discussion of his concept of the colonial church and early attempts to implement that policy
