In this thesis, an attempt has been made to examine Romano-Jewish relations during the late Republic and early Principate. After a brief introductory chapter sketching the earliest contacts between the two nations stretching back into the second century 3.0., subsequent chapters show that a succession of Roman generals - Pompey, Julius Caesar, Mark Antony, and Augustus - deliberately set out to win over Jewry. Each of these rulers regarded the tiny state of Judaea as of fundamental importance Within the framework of the Roman empire, and each, in his own way, dealt with Jewish affairs with statesmanlike diplomacy
