The Library of Adam of Dietrichstein

Barbora Ráchel Vašáková, Knihovna Adama z Ditrichštejna Abstract This bachelor thesis tells the story of the now mostly scattered library of the Moravian nobleman Adam of Dietrichstein, who lived in the second half of the sixteenth century. He began collecting books during his embassy career in Spain and later in other European countries. Dietrichstein built a special collection, which was inherited by his sons. The youngest son František subsequently multiplied it significantly during his tenure as a cardinal. The vast majority of books were taken by Swedes during the Thirty Years' War. The library was then brought to Stockholm from where the books were transported to other European cities during various events. The practical part of the bachelor thesis documents the preserved books owned by Adam of Dietrichstein. There is a table with an overview of all available information about the books and a description of three rediscovered books as well. Finally, a comparison of the libraries of Hieronymus Beck of Leopoldsdorf and Adam of Dietrichstein is made, as both men lived in very similar circumstances and their libraries have certain identical features
