O género inclui ainda patogénios intracelulares obrigatórios como o Complexo Mycobacterium tuberculosis e a espécie Mycobacterium leprae. As MNT têm capacidade de proliferação em ambientes naturais (solos e águas) ou ambientes artificiais, como hospitais e sistemas de distribuição de água da rede pública.
