International audienceThe years 1220-1245 represent a turning point in the development of the concept of the miracle as a phenomenon opposed to the order of nature and as distinct from the works of demons and natural marvels. During the same period, the procedures of canonisation trials, and especially the criticism of miracles were becoming more and more precise. This article studies the place of Hughes of Saint-Cher, a major representative of the first Dominican school, in these developments, both as a theologian and Bible commentator (1230s), and as a cardinal-expert in the trial of Edmund Rich of Abingdon (1245).
