Paradoxes et perversions : le township sud-africain

The South African township differs apparently widely from the urban form of the grand ensemble: rows of individual houses and a racially homogeneous population (Africans or Coloureds) are the characteristics of such apartheid-designed areas. Nevertheless, a closeranalysis shows the heuristic value of such an example in our comparisons, as the township corresponds (e.g. in size) to our working definition of the grand ensemble. Through an assessment of several criteria (morphological, historical, ideological, as well as its building norms and intentions), this paper demonstrates that the urban model of the township offers aperverted, paradoxical but stimulating image of the grand ensemble.Le township sud-africain, quartier résidentiel pavillonnaire réservé aux Noirs et auxMétis et construit en nombre sous le régime d'apartheid semble être une forme urbaine très éloignée du grand ensemble.
