This chapter examines Edward Said's theory of Orientalism in relation to visual and material culture in Europe and the Ottoman and Safavid worlds between 1500 and 1800. It argues that this period does not conform to Said's theory in straightforward ways and instead posits a more fluid understanding of 'Orientalism' and 'Occidentalism'
