: The human adult mandible: the among- population variations and an attempt at morphological interpretation

International audienceThe among- population variation of the adult human mandible is described by the method of extended principal component factor analysis. The ancient village community of Maule (500 A.D. in France), whose population was related by biology and the habitus, showed large biometric variations. The first nine factors (F1 to F9) extracted by PCA explained 86% of the total variance of the multivariate space defined from data consisting of 34 variables measured on 98 adult mandibles. These factors make it possible to highlight anatomical sets within the mandibular structure. Their variations were interpreted from a morpho-functional point of view, and the meanings of some measurements were discussed in context to quantify the morphological features. F1 provided evidences for a strong link between the mandible size and its (allometric?) development in height. F2 exposed the effects of the side slope of the mandibular corpus. F3 specified dynamics between protrusion of the chin, alveolo-dental arcade and wideness between temporomandibular articulations. Interpreted from an morpho-evolutionary point of view, this mandibular factor - as the comparable cranial factor - demonstrates the presence of "movements" in the cranio-facial bone structures which seem to be the result of the main evolutionary tendencies observed for the Anatomically Modern Man : recession of the face, protrusion of the chin and frontalisation of the skull. F4 revealed the existence of relationships between the morphogenesis of the mandible and the morpho-functional structures of the mastication process. With F5, it was possible to consider the alveolo-mandibular corpus as a dialectical result between the mandibulo-antemolar sets and mandibulo-molar one. F6 examined the architectural angular relationship between corpus and ramus. F7 showed the effects of antagonistic length variations between alveolo-dental antemolar and molar segments. F8 described the balance between ramus development and muscular straps in the goniac area; F9 imaged the dental nerve tracks.La variation intra-population de la mandibule humaine adulte est décrite par l'analyse factorielle en composantes principales. La communauté ancienne de Maule (1500 ans, France), population villageoise de sujets apparentés par la biologie et l'habitus, montre de fortes variations biométriques. Les neuf premiers facteurs (F1 à F9) extraits par ACP expliquent 86% de la variance totale de l'hypernuage défini à partir des 34 variables mesurées sur 98 mandibules adultes. Ces facteurs permettent de mettre en évidence des sous-ensembles anatomiques au sein de la structure mandibulaire. Leurs variations sont interprétées du point de vue morphofonctionnel et la signification de certaines mesures est discutée dans le contexte d'une quantification des traits morphologiques. F1 prouve la forte corrélation du format de la mandibule à son développement (allométrique ?) en hauteur. F2 expose les effets de l'inclinaison latérale du corpus. F3 précise la dynamique entre saillie du menton, arcade alvéolo-dentaire et écartement des articulations temporomandibulaires. Interprété d'un point de vue morphoévolutif comme réplique mandibulaire d'un facteur crânien comparable, F3 permet de mettre en évidence des " mouvements " de certaines structures osseuses cranio-faciales qui semblent être l'aboutissement des grandes tendances évolutives observées chez les Hommes anatomiquement modernes : recul du massif facial, saillie mentonnière et frontalisation. F4 expose des relations entre la morphogenèse mandibulaire et les structures morphofonctionnelles de la mastication Avec F5, le corps alvéolomandibulaire peut être envisagé dans une dialectique entre les sous-ensembles mandibulo-antémolaire et mandibulomolaire. F6 examine les rapports angulaires architecturaux entre corpus et ramus. F7 montre les effets de variations antagonistes de la longueur des segments alvéolo-dentaires antémolaire et molaire. F8 décrit l'équilibre entre développement des ramus et sangle musculaire de la région goniaque ; F9 image le trajet du canal dentaire
