In the 1990s, like many disadvantaged areas in Dublin, Ballyfermot experienced significant increases in opiate drug use and the trauma that accompanies having substance use in the family and the community. Following a number of ministerial reports on the emerging Irish drug crisis, Local Drugs Task Forces were established to address this issue at a community and interagency level. Ballyfermot Star emerged from local collaborative planning process and was led by local community members who saw a need to provide much needed supports to families suffering from the impact of substance.
