In this project, medical instruments from the historical surgical collection of the University ofWürzburg are being examined. The aim is both the exact characterisation and (functional)description of the instruments, as well as the examination of the collection against the backgroundof the professionalisation of the surgical profession between 1750 and 1850. The corequestions are: To what extent can the professionalisation of surgery in the 19th century beillustratedby the surgical teaching at the University of Würzburg?
