Of the 47 species of sharks that occur in the Indian Seas, six species contribute to major fisheries. During 1985-2006, the annual shark landings in India was 36 021 tonnes. The contribution of sharks to the total fish landings declined from 2.2 percent in 1985 to 1.0 percent in 2006. The northwest coast, which contributed 57.4 percent to the shark landings along the Indian coast, consisted mostly of the small-sized spadenose shark, Scoliodon laticaudus. The southeast coast, which contributed 25.0 percent to the shark landings, consisted of larger and high-value carcharhinids.
