In this thesis, the market maturity of different thermal energy storage solutions (TESS) was analyzed. Currently, the most mature TESS is sensible heat storage (SHS). Both latent and thermochemical heat storages have a great potential to offer low-loss storage systems with a wide temperature range. However, they have still high investment costs and challenges related to reaction stability in large-scale systems. Nevertheless, SHS is a technically proven solution in many underground thermal energy storage (UTES) projects, and it can offer a levelized cost of heat (LCOH) that is on par with fossil fuel-based heat production.
