Tieteellinen maailmankuva ja ilmenevä maailmankuva taiteessa: nemosentrinen näkökulma

Natural science produces knowledge that is characterized by its revealing of the hidden constituents of its objects. In contrast, our everyday observations and theories built upon them are based on how things seem to us. Wilfrid Sellars has described these two systems of description as the scientific image and the manifest image. Sellars considered these images independent and advocated the notion of ’synoptic vision’ which incorporates both. The modern period has changed how we understand the self and its connected notion of selfhood. The neuro - and cognitive sciences have continued the process of bringing the phenomenon of consciousness into the field of natural science, thus making a fusion of the manifest and the scientific images conceivable. This thesis takes as its premise the synoptic philosophy of Sellars, and its continuation by Ray Brassier, who has proposed a form of a rational agency that is separated from the naturalized self as a strategy to preserve the independence of the manifest image, on which our conventional psychology and the concept of a’person’ relies on. After reviewing the key philosophical concepts, I discuss various topics relevant to art and culture from this synoptic point of view. These include ’re-enchantment’; ontological versus epistemological notions of images; criticism and criticality in art; the role of experience; the conditions of presenting art; the role of context. The discussion on art is split into five parts: intellectual-perceptual, transparent-opaque, private-collective, normative-descriptive, and contextual-universal. The objective is to provide a preliminary grounding on how the ideas discussed can translate into tangible consequences through art that are relevant in the era of the Anthropocene.Luonnontiede tuottaa tietämystä joka perustuu aineen osatekijöiden paljastamiseen. Jokapäiväiset havaintomme ja niihin perustuvat teoriat sen sijaan perustuvat siihen miten esineet ilmenevät. Wilfrid Sellars on kuvannut kahta kuvailun tapaa tieteelliseksi maailmankuvaksi ja ilmeneväksi maailmankuvaksi. Näihin kuuluu "lumouksen palauttaminen", ontologiset ja epistemologiset tulkinnat kuvista, kritiikki ja kriittisyys taiteessa, kokemuksen merkitys, taiteen esittäminen ja konteksti. Käsittely on jaettu viiteen osaan: älyllinen-havainnollinen, läpinäkyvä-läpinäkymätön, yksityinen-jaettu, normatiivinen-kuvaileva, ja kontekstuaalinen-universaali. Tavoitteena on luona alustavaa pohjustusta sille kuinka käsitellyt ideat voidaan muuntaa konkreettiseksi vaikutuksiksi jotka ovat merkityksellisiä Antroposeenin aikakaudella
