The main goal of this master’s thesis was to determine if an immersion treatment process could be used to impregnate green Norway spruce with a waterborne fire retardant (FR) in a way that ensures that the FR does not leach out of the wood. The ability of wood to seal the FR inside its cellular structure was hypothesised to be based on the natural phenomenon of pit aspiration, which occurs as spruce is subject to drying. Spruce is known as a refractory wood species, which means that it is difficult to impregnate. The research revolved around adequate penetration depth for the FR, the effect of pit aspiration on leaching, the fire retardancy of the treated material, the effect of moisture content on FR uptake, the effect of diffusion stor...
