Empirical contributions to the development of structures. Design of bridges during the nineteenth century

El presente artículo reflexiona sobre la teoría de que el desarrollo de las estructuras desde el siglo XIX se produce a partir de una doble vertiente analítica y experimental. Pese a la dificultad para trazar una línea clara que defina los logros alcanzados por cada una de estas vías, podría afirmarse que son más escasos los textos que tratan sobre las aportaciones empíricas al desarrollo de las estructuras. En este sentido, el presente texto plantea una aproximación al desarrollo de las estructuras durante el siglo XIX, abordando para ello asuntos clave como la introducción de la fundición como nuevo material estructural, la génesis y el desarrollo inicial de las nuevas tipologías de puentes colgantes y tubulares, o el reto de resolver infraestructuras aptas para el tráfico ferroviario. Ejemplos en todo caso de cómo la investigación empírica y la experimentación pudieron representar una influencia decisiva en el desarrollo de las estructuras, en momentos en que no era viable obtener soluciones concretas del conocimiento teórico.This paper deals with the theory that the development of structures from XIX century is based on a double analytical and experimental side. Despite the difficulty to draw a clear line defining the achievements reached by these two ways, it could be stated that studies dealing with empirical contributions to the development of structures are more limited. In this sense, this research presents an approach to the development of structures along the XIX century, addressing thus some key issues such as the introduction of cast iron as the new structural material, the origin and early development of new types of suspension and tubular bridges, or the challenge to design infrastructures suitable for rail traffic.
