The purpose of the present article is to review published studies on the competitiveness of destinations and hotels, to determine the future research areas on the competitiveness of tourism and hotels. Also, this article considers the hospitality index as a factor for the development of the Russian Federation regions. The report and the TTCI, published every two years, compare competitiveness in 140 countries and measure a set of factors and policies that ensure the sustainable development of the hospitality and tourism sector, which, in turn, contributes to the development of the country and its competitiveness.
