This article studies some fundamental ideas of Origen and the Desert Fathers and Mothers regarding vocation. These authors reflect the conviction of early Christians regarding the general calling to holiness; but they also reveal how, at a second moment, a certain consideration needs to be done, as to whether to pursue the quest for holiness in the world or out of it
