Abstract: The World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) developed a strategy known as Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) to reduce mortality in children under five years old. The concept of the IMCI strategy arose out of the realization in the 1990s that there was a persistent and unacceptably high mortality rate in the under-five age group, particularly in developing countries. IMCI forms an integral part of South Africa’s health system according to the South African National and the National Health Plan for South Africa.
