Abstract: According to the South African Constitution, “Everyone has the right to education in an official language, or languages of their choice in public educational institutions where that education is reasonably practicable” (Constitution 1996, Chapter 2 Bill of Rights, section 29, subsection 2). This remains significant in the South African context where English is the preferred Medium of Instruction and is given preference over African languages. Since multilingual learners are often situated in monolingual schools, discrepancies arise in the implementation of linguistic social justice, and multilingual youth are disempowered.
