Penser à l'échelle du Monde. Histoire conceptuelle de la mondialisation en géographie (fin du XIXe siècle/entre-deux-guerres)

In my dissertation, I analyze the emergence of the concept of globalization in French geography (with a few insights into German, English, and American geography) between the end of 19th century and the interwar period. Although it is generally admitted that geography has been devoted until recently to the study of medium-sized areas, I show that geographers have been interested in various aspects of globalization for a long time. But how did they describe and conceptualize these facts? In order to answer this question, it is worth studying the main world objects (Part 2) which have been progressively taken into account by geographers (world economy, world network, world power...), as well as the experience of the world (Part 3) that has made possible this scientific integration (world closure, unification and division...). Even before the First World War, the emergence of notions such as the solidarity between nations points to the idea of a single world-space. Although it has often been assumed that globalization was ebbing after the First World War, my analysis of the geographical discourse of the time shows that the war itself and the crisis of the 30s were two key moments which allowed geographers to realize just how profound the world's interdependence was. We should therefore see globalization not only as an actual process of interdependence creation, but also as a vision of the world, a cosmology – which certainly doesn't fade in times of crisis. This historical research contributes to a geographical definition of globalization, and sheds new light on the foundations of the concept of the world as World, which is quintessential to any study of globalization. That is why the final part of my thesis offers a comparative investigation of the geographical ways of thinking the earth/world as a Whole.Déceler dans la géographie française de la fin du XIXe siècle aux années 1930 (et aussi dans une certaine mesure dans la géographie allemande, anglaise ou américaine), l'émergence d'une problématique souvent considérée comme récente, la mondialisation – telle est l'ambition de ce travail, exposée dans la première partie. Contre l'idée communément admise que les géographes ont privilégié jusqu'à récemment l'étude des espaces d'échelle intermédiaire, nous faisons l'hypothèse qu'ils ont été interpellés depuis longtemps par les faits de mondialisation. Comment les ont-ils décrits et pensés ? La réponse passe par l'étude (Partie 2) des principaux objets mondiaux que les géographes prennent peu à peu en charge (économie mondiale, réseau mondial, puissance mondiale) et par la caractérisation de l'expérience (Partie 3) qui rend possible cette prise en charge (finitude, unification et division du monde). Un jeu de notions apparaît décisif, dès avant 1914, dans la saisie géographique de l'espace mondial, comme la solidarité entre nations. L'analyse du discours géographique de l'entre-deux-guerres, généralement pensé comme une période de reflux de la mondialisation, le confirme : la guerre mondiale et la crise des années 1930 sont des moments clés de prise de conscience de l'interdépendance existant à l'échelle mondiale. Ce qui nous invite à penser la mondialisation non seulement comme un processus réel de mise en interdépendance, mais aussi comme une conception du monde, une cosmologie, qui ne s'évanouit pas en période de crise, bien au contraire. Cette recherche historique a donc aussi pour visée de contribuer à définir géographiquement la mondialisation, en mettant en lumière le fondement de la conception du monde comme Monde qui supporte toute réflexion sur la mondialisation ; d'où la partie finale qui propose un examen comparé des modes de penser la terre ou le monde comme un Tout en géographie
