: Typology and use-wear: case study of the Magdalenian fork-based points

International audienceMost artifacts found in palaeolithic sites have gone through an utilization process that can alter their original morphometric attributes. Thus, every typological study must consider the problem of artifact use and repair, in order to correctly interpret the morphometric variations among them. In this perspective I studied 549 fork-based Magdalenian antler points from the cave sites of Isturitz (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), Gourdan (Haute-Garonne) and Lortet (Hautes-Pyrénées). The statistical study of morphometric attributes shows that the three series have very similar characteristics — it is not possible to typologically differentiate the Isturitz points from those from Gourdan or Lortet. The points' attributes are also very homogeneous within each series, indicating the production of standardized weapon tips. Only the length of the mesio-distal part of the points, and the morphology of the distal part, show a greater variability. The question of point use is then discussed through the analysis of impact fractures and resharpening traces. The results allow us to reconstruct the points' maintenance process, explaining the morphometric variations by the repair of the borken points.La plupart des objets provenant des sites paléolithiques ont connu une période d'utilisation plus ou moins longue, qui a pu modifier leurs caractères morphométriques originels. Toute analyse typologique doit donc envisager le problème de l'usure et du ravivage des objets, pour interpréter correctement les variations morphométriques constatées entre ceux-ci. C'est dans cette perspective que nous avons analysé 549 pointes à base fourchue magdaléniennes en bois de cervidé, provenant d'Isturitz (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), Gourdan (Haute-Garonne) et Lortet (Hautes-Pyrénées). Une première approche, fondée sur l'étude statistique de variables morphométriques, révèle les caractères très similaires des trois séries : on ne peut différencier typologiquement les pointes d'Isturitz de celles de Gourdan ou Lortet. Au sein de chaque série, la population est également très homogène, indiquant une production d'armatures "standardisées". Seules la longueur de la partie mésio-distale et la morphologie de la partie distale des pointes montrent une importante variabilité. La chaîne d'utilisation est ensuite abordée, via l'étude des fractures et des stigmates de ravivage.
