In the 2015 population projections released by the Department of Statistics Malaysia, 2.9 million or 9.2% of the total 31.4 million population is aged 60 years or over. Median age of the population has increased from 17 years in 1970 to 30 years in 2020. By any measure, Malaysia is a rapidly ageing society, and this poses significant opportunities and challenges for the multi-ethnic democracy in an open, modern economy.
