This chapter will formally introduce students to the theory of cultural safety as an interdisciplinary and interprofessional model of health care. The history, contention, criticisms of, and necessity for cultural safety will also be discussed, along with related topics of racism, White privilege, discrimination and power. The principles of cultural safety, including social justice, trust, respect, self-awareness, and self-reflection, will be discussed in relation to forming the basis of culturally safe practice. The need for robust partnerships negotiated with diverse groups of people and their respective health needs will also be highlighted as a key component of cultural safety.
