The Analysis of Intercultural Communication Used by International Student in University of Muhammadiyah Malang

In this era, communication already has no boundaries and limits. People around the world can communicate easily with other people from different countries. Communication that involves people from different background cultural is Intercultural communication. Intercultural communication is required for everyone especially for a student who faced various backgrounds of culture when coming to a new environment. This is needed to avoid misunderstanding also culture shock when adapting to a new culture. The purpose of this research is to analyze culture and language used in intercultural communication by international students and find out the obstacle and the way to solve their problem of intercultural communication. The research used a qualitative method and the data taken from a questionnaire and semi-structured interview. The researcher involves six international students who take KNB Scholarship. To get the data, the researcher used Google Forms to take the data of the questionnaire and used Whatsapp chat to conduct semi-structured interviews. The researcher matched the answer from the questionnaire and semi-structured interview into several sources related to the problem of the research. The researcher found that almost all of the participants tend to speak using their culture and their speaking style, some of them modify their speaking style to facilitate their new circle. All of them speak English when communicating with people from another culture. International students had an obstacle in people who have a different accent, language, choice of word, mentality, and personality. All participants can solve their problem with trying to listen carefully, learn the local language, learn other cultures and make a small circle to build a relationship and self-confidence
