Impulsive choice refers to the preference for a smaller-sooner (SS) reward over a larger-later (LL) reward when the larger reward would have been chosen at a longer delay to the choice pair; self-control is the inverse. Patterns of preference for impulsive alternatives can have adverse effects on delay discounting and self-control, especially when associated with addiction and disabilities. Although research exists showing the effectiveness of various methods for decreasing rates of delay discounting and shifting preference towards self-control (e.g. magnitude effects; progressively increasing delays), it may be beneficial to explore additional procedures that lead to successful outcomes.
