Altersbilder sind keine unbedeutenden Begleiterscheinungen des Umgangs mit dem Alter(n), denn sie schaffen eine Realität, die diesen mitbegründet. Sie entstehen auf der Basis gesellschaftlicher Strukturen und stehen in engem Zusammenhang mit den jeweiligen (Un-)Sicherheitslagen der Älteren, so lautet die in diesem Beitrag verfolgte soziologische These. Anhand historischer Beispiele – Athen und Sparta in der Klassischen Antike und Hexen in der Frühen Neuzeit – wird idealtypisch zugespitzt skizziert, welche Wechselbeziehungen zwischen Altersbildern und den (un-)gewissen Lebenssituationen Älterer bestehen.
