Variations in the timing of mating periods have been observed in many species of wild ungulates. We examined if this reproductive variation, suggested by some authors for moose, could be formally demonstrated. Because it is difficult to get direct evidence of moose mating, we used a series of variables that have the potential to predict the timing of the mating period: vulnerability to hunting (moose killed per party of hunters), visibility (number of moose seen per hunter group) and vocalization rate (based on 3200 questionnaires).
