Antipsychotic agents represent efficient therapy for serious psychiatric disorders, particularly schizophrenia, but also bipolar disorder, and are used by millions of patients worldwide. Metabolic adverse effects of antipsychotic drugs are thought to contribute significantly to the fact that life expectancy among schizophrenic patients is reduced with several decades. In particular, the so-called second-generation antipsychotics – most notably clozapine and olanzapine - significantly increase the prevalence of obesity, dyslipidemia, and type 2 diabetes.
