Maritime Safety: Antecedents for Unsafe Actions on Chemical Tankers

Accident rates in the maritime industry have revealed a need for studies investigating antecedents for various safety-critical outcomes. In the current pre-registered study, surveys were used to assess the relationship between three individual and organizational factors and the execution of unsafe actions aboard chemical tankers. The results from the regression analysis revealed that both safety climate and situation awareness had unique contributions in explaining the variance in unsafe actions, while authentic leadership did not have a unique contribution. The results indicate that the crewmembers’ perception of the safety climate and their situation awareness are critical to the frequency of unsafe actions aboard chemical tankers.I maritim industri viser ulykkesstatistikker at det er behov for studier som undersøker forløpere for ulike sikkerhetskritiske utfallsmål.
