Spørsmål om «ontologi»: Momenter til en realistisk antropologi

The Norwegian Research Council has evaluated Norwegian anthropology and concluded that the discipline is ethnographically strong, but defensive when it comes to theoretical contributions. Researchers are now actively following up the critique through a series of theory-oriented projects. It is interesting to observe that none of these initiatives refers to what I term «classical Norwegian social anthropology» – the scholarly tradition of Fredrik Barth. It seems that «theory development» is interpreted as «contemporary international debate». The article is critical of this break and suggests that there may be theoretical potentials in the Norwegian tradition that are overlooked in the attempt to «keep up with the times». In particular, I endorse the realistic position that characterizes «classical Norwegian social anthropology» and suggest that a strengthening of this position in terms of Roy Bhaskar's critical realism may contribute a theoretical alternative to contemporary anthropological orientations.Forskningsrådets evaluering av norsk antropologi konkluderte med at faget er etnografisk sterkt, men ganske defensivt når det gjelder å bidra til teoriutvikling, og fagmiljøene har lagt seg i selen for å endre dette gjennom en serie teoriorienterte prosjekter. Artikkelen tar utgangpunkt i det faktum at disse initiativene overhode ikke refererer til «klassisk norsk sosialantropologi» – tradisjonen etter Fredrik Barth. Det kan se ut til at «teoriutvikling» automatisk tolkes som «samtidas internasjonale debatter». Artikkelen er kritisk til dette bruddet og spør om det kan ligge teoretiske ansatser i egen fagtradisjon som overses i forsøket på å være «tidsriktig». Særlig gjelder dette den realistiske grunnposisjonen i «klassisk norsk sosialantropologi». Artikkelen argumenterer for at en videreutvikling av denne posisjonen ved hjelp av Roy Bhaskars kritiske realisme kan frambringe et teoretisk alternativ til dagens orienteringer i faget.publishedVersio
