Using homework is a long tradition within Norwegian schools and in most countries. Homework is not embedded in the Norwegian curriculum and hence most teachers choose if they want to give homework or not. Research shows no clear learning effect from homework and non-instructional purposes of homework are not covered adequately in any research. Further, what design the teachers choose when assigning homework, reflects the teachers’ intentions with the assignment. By focusing on the teachers’ purposes of giving homework, we can gain a better understanding of why teachers choose to give homework.
