This article will discuss the possibilities and limitations of network models and analysis in tracing ancient trade routes. In addition to a general discussion of network models, the article will present a short case study, analysing two sources for ancient Eurasian trade, namely the Hou Hanshu and the Kharosthi documents from Kroraina. The case will look at network models generated from these two sources, before ending on a comparison between the two models. It will be argued that network models and methodology are an important tool for improving our understanding of ancient trade.publishedVersio
