This article explores variation in social workers’ understanding and practices related to the use of coercion and the protection of children's rights within residential child care in Norway. The inspiration behind this article is a discourse-oriented approach, where social workers’ construction of the child and his needs is understood as having implications for professional practice, hereby the use of restraint and coercive practices. The study builds on individual interviews and focus group interviews with a total number of 21 employees from six different residential child care units for juveniles with serious drug and behavioral problems.
