The Religious and Ritual Life of the Funnel Beaker Culture. A Discourse Analysis of Scandinavian Archaeological Research.

Rundt år 4000 fvt. kan man se store endringer i det arkeologiske materialet fra Skandinavia. Med traktbegerkulturen dukket det nå opp storslåtte jord- og steinmonumenter, underlige offerskikker og mystiske anleggsstrukturer rundt om i det neolittiske landskapet. Disse fenomenene og tradisjonene har tilsynelatende en helt annen karakter enn funn fra både eldre og yngre perioder i historien. Sporene vitner om en endring i de forhistoriske menneskenes ideologi – noe som følgelig har fanget mange forskeres interesse. Å skulle studere og tolke traktbegerkulturens religioner og ritualer er imidlertid ikke en enkel oppgave, da det innebærer å forme slutninger om det immaterielle; om de forhistoriske menneskenes tro og tanker. Dette prosjektet belyser hvordan det i religionsarkeologien er mange utfordringer og forutsetninger man bør ta høyde for i arbeidet med materialer av religiøs og rituell karakter. Fordi religion og ritualer er et kompleks tema i forhistorien – så vel som i dag – er det således blitt fremsatt en rekke ulike tolkninger og teorier av traktbegerkulturens fremmede, mystiske og ukjente ideologiske verden. Med et fokus på tre materialkategorier; graver, kultiske strukturer, og funn av offer, depot og votiv, blir det utført en omfattende analyse av den skandinaviske forskningen – de ulike tolkningene og teoriene – som foreligger rundt traktbegerkulturens religiøse sfære. Ved å studere grunnlaget forskningen baserer seg på; altså selve koblingen mellom materialene og tolkningene; blir i tillegg forskningens holdbarhet vurdert – og som analysen viser så har ikke alt en troverdig basis. I tillegg blir det bemerket flere trekk og tendenser som gjør seg fremtredende i diskursen. Som et resultat former denne oppgaven en oversikt over den skandinaviske diskursen rundt traktbegerkulturens religiøse og rituelle liv – noe som forhåpentlig også danner en gunstig og sterk plattform for videre forskning.Around 6000 BP, large and magnificent monuments of earth and stone, mysterious construction structures, as well as various sacrificial and depositional customs started to appear within the Neolithic landscape. These structures, artefacts, monuments and traditions appear to have entirely different attributes than findings from both earlier and later periods in history, confirming an alteration in the prehistoric human ideology. Consequently, this peculiar alteration has caught the attention and interest of many contemporary scholars. Comprehending and interpreting these traces, however, is not an easy task as it is impossible to read the prehistoric Neolithic mind. Accordingly, this thesis emphasizes the various challenges met in the study of prehistoric rituals and religions. Several interpretations and theories have been put forward in attempt to elucidate the Funnel Beaker Culture’s strange, mysterious and unknown ideological world, which currently may only be sensed by means of the few material traces that have been preserved to this day. Moreover, this thesis analyzes the discourse in Scandinavia surrounding the Funnel Beaker Culture’s religious and ritual life with an emphasis on three material categories: graves, cultic structures, and sacrificial findings. As a result, this thesis establishes an overview of certain theories that have proven to be applicable and favored in Scandinavian research. Subsequently, with a critical perspective, the theories will be further assessed and discussed, while simultaneously identifying prominent features. Nonetheless, as the discussion demonstrates, not all theories may be regarded as equally plausible.
