Rundt år 4000 fvt. kan man se store endringer i det arkeologiske materialet fra Skandinavia. Med traktbegerkulturen dukket det nå opp storslåtte jord- og steinmonumenter, underlige offerskikker og mystiske anleggsstrukturer rundt om i det neolittiske landskapet. Disse fenomenene og tradisjonene har tilsynelatende en helt annen karakter enn funn fra både eldre og yngre perioder i historien. Sporene vitner om en endring i de forhistoriske menneskenes ideologi – noe som følgelig har fanget mange forskeres interesse.
