Under the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.; DSM-5; American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2013), cultural concepts of distress have been identified as important to consider. One of the cultural syndromes identified is hwa-byung, which is associated with Korean cultural background. This disorder is common in Korea but relatively unknown in other countries. Korean immigrant populations in North America face pressures that impact their mental health, and hwa-byung appears to occur among Korean immigrants in North America.
