This paper analyses the conditions for syntactic alternation between the Latin gerundive and gerund with object constructions. Based on data from a corpus of texts comprising several authors between the second century BC and the fourth century AD, this analysis focuses on the diachronic variation in their frequency and on the preference for one of these constructions in specific contexts.
