.Recently the Nansemond and Chuckatuck basins have been designated as a Rural Clean Water Program demonstration area. This designation means that federal funds will be available to share the costs incurred by farmers when they implement the so-called Best Management Practices on their croplands, pastures, and feedlots. One requirement of the federal funding agency is that local governmental bodies monitor the quality of the waters in the area to document changes. One element in that monitoring effort is the study of conditions in the estuaries of these two water bodies.
