Communicating the Gospel to People With Autism

This project was designed to determine the need for a specially focused ministry for people with autism and to develop strategies for effective ministry. Autism is a neurological disorder manifested by repetitive, stereotyped behaviors and interests and by impairments in social interaction and communication. The literature review and parent survey revealed a broad spectrum of factors that limit participation of people with autism in faith communities and their exposure to the gospel. Based on information collected from teachers, therapists, parents, and church professionals, strategies were designed for effectively translating and proclaiming the gospel while giving individuals with autism opportunities to respond to the gospel through worship and Christian service. The strategies were implemented in a ministry for people with autism, and proved effective in significantly impacting the lives of the participants
