Song is a learned behavior which require various stages including hearing and production. Beginning as a juvenile, songbirds start the learning process with hearing other birds sing. Hearing involves detecting, identifying, and discriminating incoming sounds. In addition to the hearing process, the juvenile starts to practice singing by means of imitation. Song production involves the syrinx, which is the song producing organ. Membranes on the syrinx generate sound waves, producing syllables, or individual sounds, that contribute to the song. Crystallization of singing behavior occurs as the bird reaches adulthood. In adulthood, the bird's main reason for singing transitions from simply imitation to attracting mates and protecting territory (Catchpole & Slater 2008). The neural basis of the song circuit in songbirds has been well studied. Understanding the process of singing in songbirds shows that song is a good model for studying the relationship between brain and behavior
