Les thermes du centre à Bosra: L'homme, l'eau et le feu : fonctionnement et dispositifs techniques d'un grand édifice thermal romano-byzantin de Syrie du Sud

International audienceA vast monument dating from Roman and Byzantine times (2nd-6th centuries AD), the central thermal baths have never before been examined, despite their excellent state of preservation. Two of their architectural aspects are explored here: first, the circulation of bathers within the building, radically modified on a number of occasions, was characterised by its complexity.Ultimately, the monument presented 5th century bathers with a double, symmetrical, looped course, with specific variations for athletic users. Second, the monument's heating system is rapidly described. The supply of water – hot and cold –, tanks, hypocaust systems, chimneys, praefurnium and boilers; the entire air, water and heating circuit is reproduced here. Finally, by positioning the edifice within its Near Eastern context, we can see the popularity of thermal practices right into the heart of the Byzantine era, which is too often considered as representing the end of the monumental baths phenomenon.Vaste monument d'époque romaine et Byzantine (IIe-VIe s. apr. J.-C.), les thermes du centre n'avaient, malgré leur très bon état de conservation, jamais été étudiés. Deux aspects de leur étude architecturale sont ici abordés : la circulation des baigneurs dans l'édifice, d'une part, modifiée radicalement à plusieurs reprises, se caractérise par sa complexité.Le monument propose finalement aux baigneurs du Ve s. un double parcours symétrique en boucle et des variantes destinées aux usagers sportifs. Les dispositifs de chauffage du monument, d'autre part, sont ensuite rapidement décrits. Adduction d'eau – chaude ou froide –, citernes, systèmes d'hypocauste, cheminées, praefurnium et chaudières, tout le circuit de l'air, de l'eau et du feu est ici restituable. Enfin, l'insertion de l'édifice dans son contexte proche oriental démontre la vitalité des pratiques thermals jusqu'au coeur de l'époque byzantine, trop souvent considérée comme celle de la disparition du bain monumental
