This is an old controversy in french linguistics: are past participles verbal or adjectival ?Past participles used alone, i.e. without any auxiliary verb, can typically commute with adjectives. This is the reason why they are used as epithet or dislocated epithet (apposition), which seems to prop up the analysis of past participles as adjectives.
