In order to apply Semantic Differential Scales (SDS), linearity, symmetry and equidistance of scale points must be met. Violations can be explained by the presence of so-called positivity bias or by the reading behavior of respondents. The metric properties of SDS related to the two explanations were analyzed on the basis of a randomized between-subjects experiment (splitballot) which was part of a web survey of German residents (internet users, n=537), comparing classical, unipolar and meaningless SDS. The metric properties of SDS are investigated by the variability and central tendencies of the data as well as by means of Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA).
