Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Washington, 2018Feedback is a vital part of any control system, and somatosensory feedback is essential for efficient and precise movement. Thus, future rehabilitative brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), such as neuroprostheses, require the integration of somatosensory feedback for improved control. Such bidirectional BCIs (BBCIs) will both record from and stimulate the nervous system to restore function. Direct cortical stimulation (DCS) of the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) through electrocorticography (ECoG) electrodes is one possible method of providing sensory feedback to users. The future success of ECoG sensory stimulation will depend on our ability to elicit a wide range of useful tactile perceptions t...
