Thesis (Master's)--University of Washington, 2014Groundings for an Ideology of Race: From Medieval Iberia to Colonial America The concept of race starts before all the conquistadores were even born, and before they interacted with the Americas. The starting point is the Middle Ages in Iberia, when Alfonso X was in power, this is because from that time frame there are texts from which there is a reference linked to the construction of race. That ideology comes to America in the baggage of the conquistadores and it gets mixed with local ideas. In Colonial America, those ideas get visually reflected in The Caste Paintings from the XIII Century.
