Merle M. Price was born May 4, 1901, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Price attended elementary and secondary schools in Minneapolis and graduated from Central High School in 1901. He then attended State Teacher's College at St. Cloud and received his diploma in June 1921. He taught in the public schools of Gonvick and Park Rapids, Minnesota and returned to the University of Minnesota and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1924. Following this he became the principal at the high school in Grand Marais and, in 1926, again returned to the University of Minnesota.
